Bit of a Bach Season in the UK
Saw Andrea Scholl perform some Cantatas with the Basel Chamber Orchestra
Beautiful, quite beautiful
I have never quite seen an orchestral group such as the Basel CO. They obviously loved their work and were smiling at each other as they swayed to the music. There was a charming little scene where they downed their instruments and joined Scholl in his singing
Although Scholl is something of an international superstar, in this concert , although his singing was superb, he was simply part of a group of professionals that love their work making music together
Also saw the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester and the St Thomas Church Choir Leipzig perform St Matthews Passion
The St Thomas Church Choir Leipzig stretches back some 800 years and JS Bach was its most famous Kantor. Th current Kantor Georg Biller is the sixteenth Kantor since JS Bach.
St Matthews Passion was first performed in the St Thomas Church Leipzig
The Leipzig Gewandhausorchester is also claimed to be the the oldest Orchestra in the world
The concert was outstanding with only one fault to my mind
The final chorale in this piece is a strange mixture of sadness at the death of Christ mixed with joy at his resurrection. The shout for joy, to my mind requires powerful adult voices to make the full impact that Bach surely intended. Although the boys in the choir sang beautifully, they lacked that essential volume (and possibly the emotional attachment) necessary that can make that final chorale one of the most stupendous pieces of music in the Western cultural canon
