I have just been given an antique pewter coffee pot cream jug and sugar bowl.
It is rather nice, and I will want to use it. However from memory if I use pewter the coffee will 'taint'.
I am not bothered about the inside staining, but its there anything I can do to the pewter to prevent it making the coffee taste metallic?

I thought Pewter contained lead and hence is dangerous (They say the lead water pipes o Rome led to mental conditions that contributed to its fall)

I am beyond the age when that matters..... I did not think the lead in pewter had erectile ramifications

Sorry...I missed this.
If the items are antique there is a strong probability they contain lead. Modern pewter contains no lead at all. It's easy to tell if lead is present as the surface will have a greyish-black patina.
